Professor Abronsius, Sarah and Alfred have just escaped
from the bloodthirsty vampires in the ballroom. While Sarah and Alfred embrace,
the first notes of the finale of Tanz der Vampire sound out from the
orchestra pit. 26 musicians have, for nearly three hours, contributed to the
musical's success.
Altogether, the Tanz der Vampire orchestra has 35
musicians. Stuttgart's Musical Hall has an unusual feature: the drums, bass and
electric guitar, which give Jim Steinman's composition a rocky touch, sit in a
separate, isolated area to prevent them drowning out the quieter instruments.
Besides the classical instruments, modern sampling technology
is required, with the help of digital sounds and the rest of the orchestra, to
blend together a fascinating carpet of sound.
