Roadrunners
Scully travels
alone to the Utah desert to assist with a murder case,
and soon finds
herself the object of interest of the close-knit community.
Like Patience, Roadrunners was dark
and creepy and showed Scully adapting to her new partner. This, I thought, was
a good thing - I was glad that there was still a degree of conflict between
Scully and Doggett, rather than this having been resolved in the course of a
single episode. Her "abandonment" of Doggett was totally believable,
and while her explanation for doing so did seem reasonable (it was a medical
consultation, after all), it was also rather convenient. The fact that she
didn't call him until she was in Utah, with a lame excuse about not wanting to
disturb him over the weekend, makes it pretty clear that she didn't want him
there. But at least she was nice about it, and wasn't too stubborn to ask for
his help in dredging up the old cases - a nice touch which showed she does need
somebody to work with her.
This episode was certainly gory, but I didn't think it was gratuitously
so. The nastiest bit was Doggett cutting the parasite out of Scully's neck.
Scully's (very masculine) screams, though, sounded very much like they had been
badly dubbed, and I'm told that they sounded like something out of a porn film.
To quote Jenny: "So it wasn't just me who thought Scully wasn't so much in
pain as, well…excited?" Towards the end of the episode, I did get a bit
bored of Scully's man-groans and shouting. Of course, you're entitled to scream
a bit if there's a slug thing burrowing its way towards your brain, but I don't
necessarily want to listen.
The very end reminded me (and I'm sure it was supposed to) of a naughty
schoolgirl being dressed down by her headmaster. It looks like Scully's learnt
her lesson, and we know Doggett's forgiven her because he took her bag. Please.
Roadrunners was good, if not outstanding. I always find weird
townsfolk quite scary, no matter how many stereotypes they conform to. I just
don't have very much to say about it, except for a few comments related to the
best lines…
Best Lines
Doggett: I don't have a great memory for mucus.
Doggett: I just talked to a guy who had a gun in his pocket, and I
don't mean he was happy to see me.
(Oh Doggett, how can I not love you when you say such things with
absolute seriousness? J )
Scully: At this moment the FBI is searching for me!
Mad woman whose name I didn't catch: They won't find you.
(I reckon Doggett could find a single, tiny piece of hay in an enormous
stack of needles, if he wanted to)
