TO BE DEAD IS FUNNY*
Music by Jim Steinman, original German lyrics by Michael Kunze.
Magda:
Glassy eyes,
Hands like ice.
He is so cold now
But used to be so warm.
To be dead is funny.
Yesterday so noisy,
Today so still.
Yesterday still splendid,
Today already rubbish.
To be dead is funny.
To be dead is funny.
Those pinches
And his stare
When he lived
Made you sick.
But as a corpse
He now seems
Quite well-behaved
And sedate.
When he came to me,
He got me.
Now I come near to him
And he is defenceless.
To be dead is funny.
To be dead is funny.
To be dead is funny.
To be dead is funny.
His chatter
And his behaviour
When he lived
Were shameful.
But as a corpse
He only smells,
Otherwise he remains
Faultless.
He was troublesome
In my bed.
Now I suddenly think
He was actually quite nice.
To be dead is funny.
To be dead is funny.
To be dead is funny.
This is more "funny, strange" than "funny, ha-ha," but the original word "komisch" has both these meanings. Although the double meaning of "funny" may not be as appropriate as that of "komisch," I've left it in here. Thanks to Patrick Himmelmann for pointing this out!
